West Haven, Connecticut is a town with a rich history whose first settlers were recorded in 1648. During the American Revolution West Haven was the site of a great deal of activity and numerous raids. The British invaded the harbour at New Haven on July 5th, 1779 and were seen by the young militia member Thomas Painter, from his lookout spot on top of Savin Rock. This event is immortalised on the city's seal. Patriot casualties from this invasion are buried in Christ Church and First Society Cemetery.
