Alesund in Norway is a compact little town sitting on a narrow peninsula. Home to Norway's largest cod-fishing fleet there is always something happening to watch in the busy port. Take the 400 plus steps leading up from the pedestrianised shopping street to Kniven viewpoint at the top of the Aksla Hill for an amazing view of the town, mountains, fjords and islands. You will see just how much water surrounds the town. If you would rather, use your car hire to drive to the top of the hill. Take a drive to the Sunnmore Museum, a short distance from the town, where traditional buildings have been relocated and replicas of Viking and trading ships built. Spend a day at the Atlantic Ocean Park, a few kilometres away, with its huge aquarium, stunning coastal scenery and walking trails leading around World War Two bunkers and gun batteries.
