Although Sixt car hire doesn't operate a branch at Groningen Airport, it runs a service on site six days a week - Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and 9am to midday on Saturdays. Groningen and its surroundings
Groningen Airport is well-placed for tourists keen to explore the region by car. Just 10 miles north on the A28 is Groningen city. This university city has an attractive mix of historic architecture and exciting modern buildings such as its new museum, and it also has a bustling city centre that's great for shopping - look out for the Zuiderdiep, the antiques area, and the Maupertuus, a stunning art and design centre. 5 miles east of Groningen, just off the A7, is the Fraeylemaborg, a beautiful moated chateau that is one of four picturesque "estate houses" - houses of the nobility - dotted outside the city. 15 miles north west on the M361 is the Lauwersmeer National Park, a haven for rare birds and flowers which in addition boasts cycling tracks and lots of activities for watersports enthusiasts. Alternatively, 10 miles south of the airport on the A28 is Assen, the capital of the Drenthe province, whose museum houses the Yde Girl, a "bog body" mummified in peat and dating back to 54 BC. All of these would make fascinating excursions in your Sixt car hire.
